Day 1: Arrival in Douala

Our driver meets you at Douala International Airport and takes you to your hotel. In the evening your guide briefs you on the Ngondo: who the Sawa are, what each ceremony means and how to behave at the sacred rites, including when photos are not welcome.

Day 2: Douala and the festival opening

A morning in Bonanjo, the historic heart of Douala, with the Pagoda (the palace of the Bell kings) and the Wouri waterfront, then Akwa and its markets. In the afternoon you join the opening events of the Ngondo, when the Sawa communities gather and the traditional authorities open the festival.

3

Day 3: Pirogue races on the Wouri

A day at the river for the pirogue races, the most popular event of the Ngondo: long dugout canoes from each community race on the Wouri to the beat of drums and the cheering of the crowd on the banks. Your guide finds you a good viewpoint and explains the rivalries between the crews.

4

Day 4: Traditional wrestling and dance

Watch the traditional wrestling contests, where champions from the Sawa villages meet, and the dance troupes who perform in costumes passed down through generations. Free time in the late afternoon for the craft and food stalls around the festival grounds.

5

Day 5: Miss Ngondo and Sawa cooking

The Miss Ngondo pageant, where young women of the Sawa communities present the culture, language and dress of their people. In the evening, a dinner of Sawa dishes such as ndolé and fish from the Wouri, cooked the way coastal families serve them at festival time.

Day 6: The sacred immersion in the Wouri

The climax of the Ngondo: an initiate dives into the Wouri to commune with the ancestral water spirits and returns with their message for the year, which the elders then share with the crowd. You watch from the riverbank with your guide, among thousands of Douala families. Farewell dinner in the evening.
